Big Art- Lotus Pond

I put in the darks using Shadow Green (Holbein). It took almost the whole tube of paint! Next, I used drafting tape to mask some of the stems, and masking fluid on some of the seed pods. These masks aren't just to keep the areas clean; the masks are really helping me keep track of the geography of this large painting. I'm painting pthalo blue in the darker area of the leaves and painting over it with green gold, sap green, and a green made of cobalt blue and aureolin.

  1. Kathleen, do you find drafting tape keeps the paint off the stems? Doesn't it seep under? Which masking fluid do you prefer?

  2. Hi Jane,
the drafting tape works great as long as you're sticking it to clean white paper. If you've already painted the area and then try the tape, it does leak. I'm not too picky about the masking fluid brand, but I do use the colorless type. I also like the masquepen tool, and just refill it with my own masking fluid. How about you?

  6. Hi Kathleen, I'm glad I found your blog. I saw your plumeria painting in the WW exhibit in September, ( one of my paintings was in the show also), and I love your painting style. I can't wait to thee this one finished. Your paintings are so dramatic.
